Astr0mag
Astr0mag is a online blog turned physical publication that highlights the art and music scene in Las Vegas. Born out of the mind of local photographer Gabrielle Davila-Ortiz, it has expanded to include various writers and designers, including myself. I have helped design and print the issues that are released seasonally.
Challenge
We wanted this magazine to reflect our local music and arts scene, and fill the void of an arts magazine in Vegas. Because of this, we’re constantly experimenting with layout, design, and type. Having to fit in lengthy articles, photography, and cool designs proved to be a satisfying challenge.
The Process
I read the articles I’m assigned and create a mood board for each. I want the designs of these pages to still emulate the thesis of each article to tie it all together. I also research skate, goth, and art magazines from previous decades to see how I can push the boundaries of layout design.
The Result
For Astr0mag, an online blog turned seasonal print publication spotlighting Las Vegas's art and music scene, I’ve played a key role in designing and printing each issue. Collaborating with founder Gabrielle Davila-Ortiz and a talented team of writers and artists, I’ve helped craft visually compelling publications that consistently sell out shortly after release. Through our work, we’ve not only provided a platform for emerging, previously unrecognized artists but also contributed to a revival of zine and magazine culture in Las Vegas, fostering a deeper appreciation for the city’s creative community.
