Project Overview

The Menzingers

The Pennsylvania based punk band, The Menzingers, reached out to me to create tour posters, digital collateral, a stage backdrop, and merch designs. They let me have free reign, but notably enjoyed minimal colors and gritty textures that are staples of my style so I followed that direction.

Challenge

The Menzingers have been around since the mid-00s and with that comes a very solid sense of branding. Though they reached out to me because they like my style, I wanted to make sure I kept their ethos in mind. For some of these projects, I was able to use their logo and photos, while other times I had the opportunity to experiment with type and mixed media. This culminated in a project where I mixed foundation with experimentation.

The Process

I firstly sourced images that I felt resonated with their music and branding, whether that be free-use images, magazine cut-outs, or photography supplied by the band. From there, I took these images into Photoshop, distressed them and worked with different color palettes so I could achieve a punk feel that is very evident in my personal work. I further experimented with layout in Illustrator to see what worked best, balancing aesthetics with legibility.

The Result

I created 3 shirt designs, a physical tour poster, as well as a stage backdrop for their first tour. My designs for The Menzingers’ tour merch and stage backdrops contributed to a strong visual identity that resonated with their audience, driving engagement and excitement across social media. Our ongoing collaboration, including creating digital tour posters for each new tour announcement, is a testament to the effectiveness of these designs in creating lasting fan connections and promoting successful tours.
